President's Report to the CSRDS AGM 11

The Square and Round Dance Society has enjoyed a variety of experiences since  AGM10. The success of Festival 2010 in Halifax was reflected in the F2010 video that showed Canadian and Foreign dancers sharing wonderful experiences together. The five dance groups that are a part of the "Square Dance" family had the opportunity to dance and enjoy the large dance, "Convention" experience.

Unfortunately, the Society Board has not succeeded in convincing another provincial organization to host a Festival for 2012. This is most regrettable and something that we, as Board members need to redress for 2016.

Fortunately, the Eastern Ontario Square and Round Dance Association has established a Convention Organizing Committee, Chaired by Wendy VanderMeulen, to plan, organize, direct, and control Festival 2014. As Wendy has

been reporting, the plans have been completed and are being implemented successfully. With less than 3 years to go to 17 July, 2014, we can look forward to another great dance experience in Ottawa. As Society Board members we need to help with F2014 publicity and continue to encourage dancers to pre-register.

Although there is no Festival in 2012, I believe we should keep encouraging the submission of candidates for the Society "Award of Excellence". There are plenty of dedicated dancers and leaders who deserve the recognition that the award brings to them.

The newest initiative that the Society has undertaken is the "Appeal to Support Japanese Square Dance Earthquake/Tsunami Victims". Unfortunately, it was late in this years' dance season before the necessary arrangements were in place.  However, there are still eleven weeks in 2011 to bring this appeal to Canadian dancers and leaders. Please bear in mind that this appeal will be directly supporting fellow dancers in Japan, many of whom have traveled here to Canada to share in our national and provincial events.

The work of Board members is often not visible to either fellow Board members or to the dance community. I want to thank you all for what you have contributed to our activity either through your own duties or through sharing in the consensus-building that is so necessary to keep our favourite "recreation" alive. Although our total Society membership has declined, there are some locations were recruiting has been a success! I encourage all of us to keep at it and enjoy the benefits of our contribution.

Membership Report AGM 2011

In 2011, CSRDS had just under 13,000 members.

Explanation of why there is a firm deadline of December 15th.

Named certificates add the hall to our policy; therefore absolving them of any responsibility.

We would like to issue as little of these as possible, as they do not protect CSRDS, they just protect the hall; therefore they will question any requests for these certificates and only issue them in if there is no other alternative.

New dancers are trying the activity at their own risk. New dancers need to pay their membership fee for 2012 and they will be insured as of January 1, 2012.

Two claims are still be investigated, the process is long and there is nothing new to report, it could take years.

PR Report for AGM 2011

This was a difficult portfolio for me this year, as I did not have time to devote to PR.

Toll-free line has been transferred to Janet Mills in BC; the procedure for the transfer was not easy, our thanks to Lorraine for her help on this matter.

Dan Roy is doing a great job keeping the website updated.

It is encouraged that all clubs put both the toll-free line and website on all their hand-outs.

The society pins are still available; we did not sell as many this past year as we have in the past.

A new PR director is vital to the continued growth of dancing in Canada.

Convention Coordinator Report

Annual General Meeting   October 22, 2011

Montreal, Quebec

Submitted by Norman Demeule - Convention Coordinator

Due to no bids received Convention 2012 will not take place.

Congratulations to Ottawa for taking on the task of hosting Festival 2014.

Festival 2014 will take place July 17 to 19, 2014 in Ottawa, ON. We urge all Square Dancers to register early, your support is needed.

Looking into the future all areas should seriously look into placing bids for

Convention/Festival 2016,  and 2018.

Thanks to Roy and Joan Church

At this time, the Board and Society members have to reluctantly say Thank You to Roy and Joan Church, because we wish they weren't leaving.

They joined the Society Board in 1991 with Roy taking on the duties of Treasurer. They stuck with that job until 2002, when Roy volunteered to become the President.

After a four year term directing the affairs of the Society, Roy again offered to be the Treasurer until this year. So they have served the Canadian Square Dance activity for a full two decades. That kind of long-term dedication is wonderful.

The dedication and enthusiasm that Roy and Joan have brought to the Canadian Society is really something to be admired. They have seen many changes in the dance form and in the way the Board conducts business. Roy has managed to establish a very efficient and effective system for conducting the financial affairs of the Society. The careful bookkeeping and accurate control of our finances are a standard which we will always be trying to achieve!

On behalf of the Board members and the entire Canadian Square Dance community I want to thank you both for what you have done for and with the Society. We wish you continued happiness and contentment for many years to come on The Rock.

It gives me great pleasure to present this Certificate of Appreciation and your Past Directors' Pins.

Inge has a small token to present as well.
